Shadow and Bone by Leigh Bardugo

Next up for me was Shadow and Bone. I had to read it because we’re talking about it next week in my Facebook group The Charmed Hideaway. I have several friends who told me to read this one.

A quote from Shadow and Bone by Leigh Bardugo

Alina Starkov is an orphan. She and Malyen Oretsev grow up together in an orphanage at Keramzin. When they are about eight, the Grisha test them for magic. But neither one tests as Grisha so there they remain.

Fast forward to when they are older and members of the Army. Mal is a tracker. Alina is an apprentice mapmaker. They ready themselves to travel across the Shadow Fold.

Brief Summary (while trying not to give everything away)

Shadow and Bone has Alina and Mal attempting to cross the Shadow Fold, but volcra attack their sand skiff. Mal saves Alina and she returns the favor. It is then that they discover that Alina does have a Grisha power. She and Mal are separated as she must learn how to control her power. What is that power? Read it and find out!

Recommendation?

Shadow and Bone presents an interesting world. The names sound Russian. Yet, the maps tell us that it’s not of our world. Leigh Bardugo builds a world where magic exists, but with limits. There are twists and turns throughout so you’re not always sure who exactly you are rooting for. If you’re a fantasy lover, you don’t want to miss this one.

My plan for 2021 is to write a blog post for each book I read. Last year, I read 150 books. We’ll see how I do this year.
