I borrowed The Last Dragon King back in October of 2023, but I didn’t decide to read it until now. I’m not sure how I found it, but it’s definitely good.
Arwen loses her father when she is 9. Because she has a younger sister to help her mother care for, Arwen becomes a hunter. At the start of the story, Arwen hunts and kills a cougarin. When she arrives home, she hears that the King is looking for a wife. Immediately, this made me think of Cinderella.
Arwen’s mother encourages her to flee as Arwen is not her biological daughter. Instead, Arwen’s mother gave birth to her and died. The woman who raised her was the midwife. Arwen has more magic than she was aware of and that’s why she needed to run. However, she was caught.
Brief Summary (while trying not to give everything away)
In The Last Dragon King, Drae is the last dragon king. As king and a royal, he is the only one who can transform into a dragon. But he needs a wife who can bear him an heir, which means finding someone with enough magic to carry the child. Who will he pick?
This story grabbed me as evidenced by the fact that I stayed up until 4 am to finish reading it. I cried. As my friends can tell you, I don’t like crying, and yet, I still consider this a fantastic story. It’s the first of a series, but I’m undecided as to whether or not I’ll carry on reading. Unlike most authors who introduce you to one or both of the characters in the next book in the series, this only introduced the other king. I didn’t get a good enough sense of him to determine that I needed to read his story.
