When He Was Wicked is the next book in the Bridgerton series by Julia Quinn. This one starts before Romancing Mister Bridgerton and To Sir Phillip, With Love, but continues through the same time period.
Michael Stirling, the Earl of Kilmartin. He has been in love with Francesca Bridgerton Stirling since the day he met her, which was two days before her wedding to his cousin, John. Michael becomes the Earl after John dies two years into his marriage with Francesca.
Francesca Bridgerton, the third eldest of the Bridgerton girls, who shares a birthday with her older sister, Eloise. At the beginning of the book, you meet her husband, John, but John dies suddenly. Now she’s a widow. Shortly after inheriting the title, Michael leaves England for India and Francesca manages the estate.
Brief Summary (while trying not to give everything away)
In When He Was Wicked, we first see Francesca happily married to John while having a great friendship with his cousin, Michael. But tragedy strikes. John never wakes from a nap. Francesca, who was pregnant when John died, loses the baby.
Michael, who has now inherited the earldom, flees for India as he loves Francesca and feels guilty about John dying. Yet, when Michael returns a few years later, he comes home to a Francesca who is determined to marry again because she wants a baby.
Recommendation?
This book seems different from the other Bridgerton books. Maybe it’s because Francesca herself is different, but it feels different from the others. It could also be because the other siblings aren’t in this book as much as the others. Still, this book is a definite must read from me for anyone who likes historical romances.
